“The Catholic Charismatic movement is one of the many fruits of the Second Vatican Council…like a new Pentecost.” (Pope John Paul II, 1998) The Catholic Charismatic Renewal does not have any individual person as a recognized founder, like other renewal movements such as Cursillo. The movement began in 1967 during a retreat at Duquesne University in Baltimore, Maryland. The Holy Spirit, the power and love of God, burst into the lives of the people involved as He had done at Pentecost. God’s grace was released in a profound way from the Initiation Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. This experience has come to be known as “baptism in the Holy Spirit.” The fire of this encounter with God, spread rapidly around the world to 238 countries by today with about 120 million Catholics having experienced the “infilling of the Holy Spirit,” as Pope Paul VI called it. In 1975 he said that this “spiritual renewal” was a “chance for the Church and for the world.” In 1979 Pope John Paul II said: “I am convinced that this movement is a sign of the spirit’s action… a very important component in the total renewal of the Church.” |

These seminars are a series of seven talks designed to lead people through the basic message of salvation. There are also personal testimonies, reflections on scriptures and small group discussion. The seminars are designed to help participants establish or deepen a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. They also help them to yield to the action of the Holy Spirit in their lives so that they can begin to sense His presence and experience Him working in and through them. Pope John Paul II described these seminars as:“A grace directed to sanctify the Church, to renew in her the taste for prayer, and to rediscover with the Holy Spirit, the sense of thankfulness, of joyful praise, of confident intercession, and to be converted into a fountain of evangelization.” |
