In Acts, Luke re-
counts Jesus’ return to the
heavenly realm, which takes
place after “forty days,” that
biblically significant number.
His point: the apostles experi-
enced the presence of the
risen Christ with them over an
extended period of time. His
parting words to them: wait
for the promised Holy Spirit,
later described as
“power” (the Greek word is
dynamis). The Holy Spirit is
the “power” they will need to
be his witnesses, not only to
the Jews, but to all the Gen-
tiles as well.
In the Gospel Mark
notes the signs that will ac-
company their work: exor-
cisms, the ability to speak
new languages, preservation
from dangers, and healings.
The work they are to do is

WORLD YOUTH DAY: The bishop of Rio de Janeiro says:
"Young people of the whole world, Rio de Janeiro is awaiting you,
just like Christ the Redeemer, with open arms! May everyone
come with a spirit of pilgrimage and popular celebration for an
experience of Christ together with the Pope in the WYD of Rio de
Janeiro from July 23-28, 2013!"
NEW PROLIFE WEBSITE: Archbishop Miller said: “Canada does
need a law, and this initiative is a helpful first step toward correct-
ing an unacceptable legislative void that is unique among democ-
ratic nations. I encourage Canadians to support it and pray for its
success.

paign is to build support for federal legislation that restricts abor-

LAST SUNDAY’S HOMILY: Rarely do I get a response to a Sun-
day homily as I did last week with my comments that animals
(dogs) cannot be our friends in the full sense of the word, refer-
encing the words of Jesus: “I no longer call you servants but
friends.” In the creation account found in the first chapter of
Genesis we read: “God created man in the image of himself, in
the image of God he created him, male and female he created
them.” In calling us “friends” Jesus, the second person of the
Blessed Trinity, initiates a relationship that we are invited to enter
into, God being a friend with us. The text goes on to say: “Be
masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven and all the liv-
ing creatures that move on the earth.” All living organisms have
souls but man’s soul differs from the souls of animals and inani-
mate beings, plants etc. First, it is the seat of intelligence or rea-
son. For this reason a man is held responsible for his actions in a
way that animals are not. Secondly, man’s soul is immortal. Ani-
mals do not have the intelligence which allows them to choose
either God's will or their own will. What we erroneously refer to as
“intelligence” with animals is really “instinct and habit.” There is,
then, an incomparable distance, say, between the soul of the sor-
riest human being who ever lived and the most noble brute animal
that ever walked the earth. The former can choose the latter can-
not. Lastly, we read in the catechism of the Catholic Church, #
2418 “… it is likewise unworthy to spend money on them
(animals) that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery.
One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection
due only to persons.”
Tickets for Bishop’s celebration on June 23: On June 23, 2012
our Diocesan community will celebrate Bishop Gerald Wiesner’s
75
th
Birthday in anticipation of his Retirement, beginning with
Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 4:30 p.m. followed by a ban-
quet at the Prince George Civic Centre. There are only 70 ban-
quet tickets still available for purchase and it is expected these will
sell out soon. There will be no tickets at the door. Those who have
reserved tickets but have not yet paid for and picked these up are
asked to do so as soon as possible; contact Mary-Anne Lewis
Jamin at the Diocesan Centre, phone 250-964-4424 or email ma-
jamin@netbistro.com.
